Acne Scar

Acne scars—pits, depressions or raised marks—occur after severe or untreated acne. Modern aesthetic dermatology at Cutis Hospital employs a mix of lasers, peels, fillers, subcision, and surgical revision to minimize scar appearance and restore smooth, healthy skin.

Overview

Acne scars are classified as atrophic (icepick, boxcar, rolling) or hypertrophic/keloidal. Treatment selection depends on scar type and skin tone—CO ₂ lasers, chemical peels, microneedling, dermal fillers, and subcision. Cutis Hospitalʼs dermatologists use a multimodal protocol for best results.
Acne scars affect self-esteem and skin confidence. Cutis Hospital offers personalized assessment and multiple treatment options, including fractional lasers, fillers and scar revision surgery—to achieve smoother texture and even tone.

What causes acne scars?

An acne lesion (pimple) grows when bacteria, oils and dead skin fill up and inflame pores, the tiny openings in your skin through which oil and sweat rise to the surface. Some 40,000 cells fall off your skin every hour but, sometimes, those dead cells clog up a pore. Sometimes clogged pores are small and result in “whiteheads or blackheads.” Sometimes these pores become inflamed and lead to other types of acne. If you have acne, you’re not alone! Acne is the most common skin condition in the world. About 80% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 will have it. Teenagers get acne thanks to their changing hormones.

How are scars treated?

Scars are treated with a variety of methods depending on their type and severity, including topical creams or silicone sheets to reduce inflammation and improve texture. Steroid or 5-FU injections are used for raised or keloid scars to flatten and ease symptoms like itching and pain. Laser therapy and dermabrasion help resurface the skin, fading redness and uneven coloring for smoother results. Surgical procedures such as scar revision, skin grafts, and Z-plasty may be considered for severe or movement-limiting scars. Other options include chemical peels, cryotherapy, or fillers to improve depressed or discolored scars
